Maldives Immigration has introduced passport cards, as an alternative to the existing standard passports. The card was unveiled by President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, at a ceremony held at President's office.
Apart from being an identity travel document, the Passport Card can be linked to the holders' account at the Bank of Maldives, and insurance plan at Allied Insurance Company of the Maldives. The new passport card can be used internationally and domestically, according to Maldives Immigration. The Passport Card also allows other additional e-services like e-transport to be incorporated.
At the ceremony, the Controller General of Maldives Immigration Mohamed Anwar presented to the President, his Passport Card. Speaking at the ceremony, the Controller General said that the passport card was an initiative of the President and assured the passport card has modern and high security features, as the card can be used to withdraw money. He noted that the Maldives Immigration aspires to ensure convenience for economic and trade of the country through introduction of such modern services.
Speaking at the ceremony, Minister of Economic Development Mohamed Saeed commended Maldives Immigrations for adopting modern services in line with the vision of the President. He noted that the Maldivian passport is world renowned for its high security features.
Speaking to PSM News, CEO of Dermalog Identification Systems Günther Mull said that the card has high security features, while it can also be used for multiple purposes. The CEO of the German-based company, which designed the passport card, said the Maldivian authorities can add any additional features to the passport card in the future.
