Telethon to assist Rohingya Muslims ends successfully

The two day nationwide telethon to assist Rohingya Muslims has ended successfully with over USD 11 million rufiyaa in donations.

The telethon organised by Ministry of Islamic Affairs and Public Service Media (PSM) was held in collaboration with media organisations, government authorities and non-governmental organisations, to assist Rohingya Muslims affected by the conflict in Myanmar. Even if the telethon has ended, contributions will be accepted via fund boxes, according to organisers.

Upon completion of the telethon, Minister of Defence and National Security urged organisers to deposit the donations collected from various fund boxes across the country to the allocated bank accounts at Bank of Maldives and Maldives Islamic Bank, by Thursday. The organisers revealed that the final amount collected as donations to assist Rohingya Muslims would be announced at a special event held on September 30.

Over 422,000 of Myanmar's minority Rohingya population have fled the country's western state of Rakhine to neighbouring Bangladesh, since the violence began on August 25, after Myanmar's brutal military crackdown on Rohingya muslims in Rakhine state, according to the United Nations.
