Maldives to play a key role on the Rohingya crisis at UNGA

Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the United Nations, Dr. Ali Naseer Mohamed has assured that the Maldives will be a country which plays a key role at the debate on the Rohingya crisis scheduled at United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on October 27.

In an exclusive interview with PSM News, the Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the United Nations reiterated that that the that the vote taken by UNGA on Friday was not related to the Rohingya crisis and that it would be scheduled on October 27. He said when the debate for the crisis starts, Maldives will be one of the countries which play a vital role.

Dr. Ali Naseer Mohamed assured that Maldives will push United Nations to stop the human rights violations by the military of Myanmar against the Rohingya Muslims and the government would always stand with the Rohingya Muslims at the United Nations. The oppositions claim that government deliberately backed off from taking part in the vote.

A statement published by Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding the vote denied all the claims that Maldives refrained from participating in a vote taken at the UNGA regarding the Rohingya crisis.

Speaking regarding the issue, Permanent Representative Dr. Ali Naseer Mohamed revealed that country names were not specified on the vote. Noting that debate on the Myanmar is continued for more than 22 years, Dr. Ali Naseer Mohamed stated that changes were only brought to the Myanmar Government during the last two years and Maldives stressed at the 3rd United Nations committee and United Nations Human Rights Council that positive changes would only be seen if reforms were made to the law related to Rohingya Muslims.

Maldives has always condemned in the strongest terms the atrocities committed against the Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar. Maldives has called on the United Nations to take strongest possible action against the perpetrators of the injustices committed against Rohingya Muslims.
