Action Plan to tackle issues in legal & judicial system launched

Judicial Symposium on Child Rights and the Juvenile Justice System held at the National Judicial Conference 2017 composed a Short-Term Action Plan to tackle issues in the legal and judicial system.

At the Judicial Symposium on Child Rights and the Juvenile Justice System held at the National Judicial Conference 2017 discussions were carried on areas to enhance the juvenile justice system of the Maldives. Also a special report of the Panelists at the Judicial Symposium on Child Rights and Juvenile Justice, making recommendations for long-term action in order to enhance the juvenile justice system was also developed. During the symposium, eight papers were related to key areas of the Juvenile Justice System. These include A Critical Analysis of the Law, Independent Institutions and Executive Agencies, Courts, Court Procedure, and Court Administration, Law and Children with Special Needs, Children in Conflict with the Law and as Victims of Crime: Understanding Patterns and Causes, and Finding Solutions and Remedies, Dealing with Juvenile Offenders, and The Dividing Line: Legal Capacity of the Child and the Age of Criminal Responsibility. The Judicial Symposium on Child Rights and the Juvenile Justice System has been organized by the Judicial Academy of Maldives in collaboration with the Juvenile Court and United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF).

The action plan developed at the symposium will enable to improve the actions taken immediately and it will also augment the long term strategies, Registrar of Juvenile Court Zaeema Nasheed Abubakuru said while speaking to reporters. Developing children are vital for a community's future, Mohamed Naeem said while speaking on behalf of UNICEF. The symposium will pave way for the development of children, he said. 

On behalf of the participants of the symposium, Chief Judge of Criminal Court Adam Arif highlighted the importance of the symposium and noted that many important issues were discussed.

The four day symposium was initiated by the Chief Justice of Supreme Court Abdulla Saeed.
