Government will continue to uphold democracy - President

President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has stated that this administration will continue to work towards upholding democratic principles and the laws of the nation.

The President made the statement in a tweet posted to coincide with the International Day of Democracy, which was marked globally on September 15. The United Nations' (UN) International Day of Democracy is annually held to raise public awareness about democracy.

Various activities and events are held around the world to promote democracy on this date. Various activities have been held in the Maldives to mark the day by the government authorities and local Non-governmental organizations. This includes special activities held in the island of Huraa in Kaafu Atoll.

Residents of Huraa, students from Huraa School, officials from Huraa Council, officials from the Elections Commission, independent institutions and officials working in government and private offices in Huraa participated in the marathon held under the banner "Democracy Run 2017".

According to the Elections Commission, activities included awareness components brought via media in order to ensure as many citizens are made aware of democratic values and principles.
