Government establishes committee to raise funds for Rohingyas

The government of Maldives establishes a special committee to raise funds to provide aid for the ethnic Muslims of Rohingya.

At a press conference held at Dharubaaruge convention centre to announce the establishment of the special committee, the organisers revealed that the committee would monitor and plan various activities to raise funds and aid for the Rohingya. The committee consists personals from Ministry of Defence and National Security, Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Ministry of Home Affairs, Disaster Management Centre and media personals. The committee is chaired by the Minister of Defence, Adam Shareef Umar.

A hotline number for the public to engage in the works of the committee would be established, the organisers of the committee revealed. In addition, an account has been established at the national bank of Maldives, Bank of Maldives, to deposit funds raised to help the Muslims of Rohingya.

Maldives, being one of the first countries to respond to the situation of Rohingya Muslims, has planned a telethon to raise aid and funds from 23 to 24 of this month.
