Stalled projects in fisheries islands a huge drawback: Minister

Stalled development of islands handed for fisheries projects is a huge drawback for the development of the fisheries sector of Maldives, according to Minister of Fisheries and Agriculture Dr. Mohamed Shainee. The Minister made the remarks while speaking on Zimma TV programme, aired on PSM News.

Currently the exporting of fish products is carried out in Koodoo Island of Gaafu Alif Atoll, Maandhoo Island of Laamu Atoll and Felivaru Island of Lhaviyani Atoll.

The current administration has handed the development of additional islands to develop as fisheries islands, Minister Shainee highlighted. Funadoo Island of Thaa atoll is one such island which has halted its work since 2008 but noted that with the effort of the current administration the works have resumed, Minister said. Minister Shainee further highlighted that the current administration has attained much higher achievements in the development of the fisheries industry compared to the previous administrations.

On this note, the Minister highlighted the works done to establish ice plants in every atoll of Maldives. The establishment of these ice plants would be completed by December 10, this year, the Minister revealed. Minister Shainee further stated that the current administration of Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom is working on to establish fishermen marinas in various parts of Maldives. Currently a marina is operating in Felivaru Island and an additional marina is expected to be established in Koodoo Island by the end of this year, Dr. Shainee said. Marinas are also expected to be established in Hulhumale' and two other locations, according to the Minister.
