President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom revealed that an agreement was signed by political leaders in 2013 to establish an administration with foreign influence. The President made the remark while speaking at a function held by the Progressive Party of the Maldives on Sunday.
Stating that it is hard to reveal such stories with him being the President of the country, President Yameen disclosed that in 2013 political leaders signed an agreement to establish an administration with foreign influence in the Maldives. Expressing the interest of foreigners to Maldives, President Yameen affirmed that a dangerous agreement named "TOIKA" was signed by political leaders.
President Yameen agreed that the political leaders came to discuss the agreement with him, and said that he refused to agree. The President further said the agreement was dismissed due to the submission of a no-confidence motion against the then Speaker of the Parliament Abdulla Shahid.
President Yameen reiterated the administration's efforts in best executing the country's rule of law. In his speech, the President underscored the high priority accorded by the administration to promote equality, justice, and peace among the people. He also stated the importance given by the administration to the practice of good governance.
Highlighting the high rise of corruption in the country, the President urged to make note of the situation the people would be in, if those in the highest offices of the State were submerged in bribery. Continuing on, President Yameen noted that minimising the destruction of our social fabric was hard yet essential, and mentioned that the material goals were attainable as long as we were on the right path.
Raising question regarding the people's situation, if responsible authorities for the highest offices of the State were drowned in bribery, president urged every institution to adhere to their respective ethical guidelines. The President assured that the administration gives priority to good governance and peace, and to bring justice for the people.
The event was attended by members of the Cabinet and the Parliament.
