Major aspects of the waste management project in zone 6 and 7 would be completed by the end of this year, according to the Deputy Minister of Environment and Energy, Ali Amir.
Within this year, waste management centers in 18 islands, in addition to the waste management centers in Addu City and Fuvahmulah City would be completed and equipped for operation, the Deputy Minister said.
The islands of Gaafu Alifu Atoll, Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, Fuvahmulah City and Addu City in Zones 6 and 7, have seen major waste management issues over the years. The current administration has taken the concern of the citizens into consideration and has announced the mega project of waste management centers in each of these islands. The regional waste management centre offers a means to manage waste at a regional level. Under the waste management project in zone 6 and 7, a central waste management centre in Huvadhoo Atoll and a regional waste management centre in Addu city are all set to be established. Under project, an Indian company has been assigned to manufacture the vehicles required for the project and the final designing stage is also underway, the Deputy Minister said.

Waste management facilities have been established in almost all islands of Huvadhoo Atoll, the Deputy Minister further revealed. He expressed confidence that the s6islands has which have not been covered by the project would be attended soon and the project to develop waste management centres in 2 more islands have been contracted. The regional waste management centers which are to be developed in Fuvahmulah and Hulhumeedhoo Island would cost up to USD 6 million dollars, according to Deputy Minister Amir.
