Maldives and Pakistan to work together to curb terrorism

President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has stated that Maldives and Pakistan shall redouble efforts to curb terrorism and extremism. The President made then statement at the press briefing held jointly with the visiting Prime Minister of Pakistan, Muhammad Nawaz Sharif, following talks held between the respective delegations at the President’s Office.

President Yameen reiterated the countries’ commitment to collaborate on several fronts including efforts to curb terrorism and extremism and combatting climate change.  The President also expressed gratitude towards Pakistan’s readiness to operate a medical school and medical college in the country.  He also assured that, as two Muslim nations that prioritize peace, more collaborative efforts of Pakistan and Maldives would be seen through international organizations such as AOSIS and the UN.

Addressing the press, Prime Minister of Pakistan, Muhammad Nawaz Sharif stressed on the importance of making SAARC a vehicle for ensuring peace and stability in South Asia. Speaking in that manner, the Prime Minister applauded President Yameen for his efforts to try and hold a SAARC Summit in Pakistan.

Speaking on areas of collaboration, the Prime Minister noted the agreements signed between the two countries in the areas of sports, health, education and combatting drugs, during President Yameen’s official trip to Pakistan. The Prime Minister noted that four working groups have been formulated to monitor the implementation of the 2015 agreements, in addition to the MoUs signed today. He vowed to increase bilateral cooperation in addition to cooperation in the international arena.
