The Criminal Court of Maldives has sentenced to keep Parliamentarian for Dhiggaru Constituency Ahmed Faris Maumoon in detention until the end of the trial of the charges raised against him.
Faris Maumoon was arrested based on allegations that he attempted to bribe Parliamentarians, ahead of the no confidence vote of the Speaker of Parliament. The court decided to hold Faris Maumoon in detention after hours of discussions. Faris Maumoon was arrested on Tuesday based on charges of bribery, according to the court documents. Police searched his residence taking the CCTV footage from the building and arrested him on Tuesday.
Faris had attempted to influence and bribe Parliamentarians, to get the 45 signatures required for the motion, according to the Criminal Court order. He was also accused of illegal activities, posed potential risk to an ongoing investigation and could hide evidence or influence witnesses.
