Parliamentarians of the government coalition pledged support for the constitutional matter presented to the Supreme Court by Attorney General's Office. At the joint press conference held today by Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and Maldives Development Alliance (MDA), members representing the government in the parliament revealed their support to the constitutional matter presented to the Supreme Court.
Speaking at the press held at Dharubaaruge convention centre, the leader of PPM parliamentary group and the majority leader of Parliament, Ahmed Nihan Hussain Manik stated the tradition of defecting parties for financial benefit was introduced by the government of President Mohamed Nasheed. At the press conference, leader of MDA and the parliamentarian for Meedhoo constituency said the public elects members to the parliament with hard work and great expectations and to defect to another party for financial benefit or personal interests is unacceptable.

In the wake of number of parliamentarians defecting to the opposition movement who has submitted a no confidence motion against the speaker of parliament, the Attorney General's Office submitted a constitutional matter to the Supreme Court which would strip parliamentarians off their seats under specific conditions.
