Customs reports a 16% increase in revenue in May 2017

Maldives Customs Service has reported a 16% increase in revenue generated in the month of May, compared to the same period, last year.

Maldives Customs Service generated a revenue of MVR 239 million this May, while the amount stood at MVR 206 million in 2016. Statistics released by the authority show a 3% increase in the value of imports in May 2016, compared to May 2017.

In May 2016, goods worth 3.3 billion Rufiyaa were imported to Maldives while this amount increased to 3.4 billion Rufiyaa this year. Most of these imports were from the UAE, China, Singapore, India and Malaysia. 19% of goods were imported from UAE, 16% from China, 13% from Singapore, 10% from India and 8% from Malaysia, according to the Customs Service.

The amount of exports in May this year saw a hike of 34% compared to May, last year. Goods worth MVR 373 million were exported in May 2016. In May 2017, the amount increased to MVR 498 million. The statistics showed that majority of exports from Maldives consisted of fish and fish products, while 63% of Maldivian products were exported to Thailand.
