Out of pocket health expenditure in Maldives down to 29.5%

Minister of Health Abdulla Nazim has stated that out of pocket health expenditure in Maldives which was close to 50% in 2011 has come down to 29.5% in 2014.

The Health Minister made the remark while addressing at a function held to disseminate the Maldivian National Health Accounts 2014. He added that a significant amount of money was spent on the development of the health sector, and that it is an achievement of the government in their efforts to provide every citizen with proper health care facilities.

At a function held the Maldivian National Health Accounts 2014 was inaugurated by Minister of Finance and Treasury Ahmed Munawwar. Addressing the function, Minister Munawwar said that this study shows the importance the government is giving to the health sector.  Maldives national health accounts 2014 is the first such report formulated after the introduction of Aasandha on 2012. At the function, a presentation was shown based on the expenses, resources and developments of the Health Sector in the year 2014.

The aim of this publication is to present an analysis of health financing system of the Maldives and to provide information and evidence for health policy decisions and resource distribution to improve the quality of health service delivery across the country. The study presents a descriptive analysis of resource flows in the health system, showing where resources come from and how they are used. This study is formulated as an aid in shaping the health financing reform and it constitutes an essential benchmark for assessing the health system performance and evaluating health policies in the future.
