Environment Ministry to begin Thilafushi waste disposal project

Minister of Environment Thoriq Ibrahim has stated that preparations are underway to begin a safe waste disposal project worth 120 million U.S. dollars, in Thilafushi Island.

Minister Thoriq said that work on designing the regional transfer center to be established in Thilafushi is currently underway and that the center in Thilafushi would be processing waste from Zone Three, which includes Male' City. He added the Ministry has secured fifty million dollars for the project.

However, the Minister said that they are working on securing the remaining funds needed to implement the project. Minister Thoriq said that before the end of 2018, secure waste disposal systems would be established in all inhabited islands. Zone three includes Male' Atoll, Alifu Alifu Atoll and Alifu Dhaalu Atoll.

Waste management in the greater Male' region is now carried out by Waste Management Corporation Limited (WAMCO).
