Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) has stated that the 2017 Local Council Election was a great success for President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.
Addressing a press conference held by the party on Thursday, Party Secretary General and Member of Parliament for Nilandhoo constituency Abdulla Khaleel said that although PPM did not manage to haul in the majority in the election, President Yameen solely winning 41% of the votes was no minor feat. He also noted that some candidates who contested the election as independents are now in cohorts with PPM and would soon be seen signing with the party.
Khaleel said that the opposition is intimidated by the strength of the party, which is being continuously showcased in the party meetings held in the wake of the election, and accused the opposition of trying to break the ranks. Khaleel accused the opposition of trying to confuse the citizens.
PPM reiterated its stance that the citizens trust the government and not local councils. He added that the citizens trust efforts, only by the government.
