Dhivehi language needs to be researched: Vice President

Vice President of Maldives Abdulla Jihad has emphasized the need for the Dhivehi language to be researched and established as an international language.

Vice President Abdulla Jihad was the Guest of Honor at the special function held, Tuesday night, to confer the Dhivehi Language Academy Awards.

Addressing the function, the Vice President noted the richness of the Dhivehi language and called on researchers to research the dialects spoken across the country and include words used in Dhivehi dialects in Dhivehi language dictionaries. Vice President Jihad also noted the importance of using technological resources to develop and enrich the language.

Addressing the function, the President of the Dhivehi Language Academy Ashraf Ali said that it is a responsibility of every Maldivian citizen to enliven Dhivehi language, Dhivehi literature and the Maldivian history.

The awards that were conferred were named after renowned linguistic and literary figures.  Kashima Ahmed Shakir won the award in the category of documenting history.  Mohamed Saleem won the award in writing. Ustad Adam Zahir won the award in the category of teaching Dhivehi. Jawish Hameed won the award in making Dhivehi language, technology friendly, while Hassan Manik won the award for poetry.

This is the first time, the Dhivehi Language Academy Awards have been conferred. The academy wishes to create a healthy competition in serving the language, through the award.
