Election Commission says 66% voted in the Local Council Election

Elections Commission of Maldives has revealed that the voter turnout in the 2017 Local Council Election was 66%.

Addressing a press conference held after announcing the final results of the election, member of the commission Ahmed Akram said the election proceeded smoothly as per the preferences of the commission and the citizens. Akram noted the support of the citizens, political parties and relevant government institutions in ensuring such a smooth process.  He added that, Maldivian citizens and international observers accepted the election as free and fair.

According to the Elections Commission, a total of 116 complaints were filed with the Complaints Bureau, of which 115 have been investigated. The commission however noted that only one complaint carried enough weight to affect the results of the election. The commission also noted that they have decided to send three of the aforementioned 116 complaints, for prosecution. The commission has also requested police to investigate one complaint.

Elections Commission also noted that the voter turnout was 66%. The commission also expressed concern about the large percentage of void votes in this year's election and said that they would try to address the concern, in the next polls.
