President Yameen calls on clubs to win the SAARC Championship

President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has appealed to local football clubs to set targets to win the SAARC Championship within the next three years.

At a meeting held at the President's Office, President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom appealed to all first division football clubs to work together towards winning the SAARC championship within the next three years. He called on all clubs to prioritise national pride over competition at club level.

Speaking at the meeting, President Yameen said that the Administration's aim was to aid the progress of individual players, in order to create a competitive environment for national squad selection. The President also reiterated the administration's commitment to achieving this goal.

Highlighting the administration's decision to assign club sponsorship to state companies, President Yameen noted that this step was taken in order to relieve the financial issues faced by local clubs. He reminded all company officials that this expense from their promotional budget would go towards building a generation of talented football players.

The meeting was attended by senior officials of the Football Association of Maldives (FAM), President of Maldives Olympic Committee, senior representatives from first division football clubs, and senior officials from state Companies sponsoring the clubs. At the meeting, representatives from first division clubs presented a plaque of appreciation to President Yameen, for his commitment towards the advancement of football.
