Maldives Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) begins trials of the newly installed water plant on the southern side of Malé City.
The plant, which boasts the capacity of producing 5000 tonnes of fresh water was installed by Hitachi. The project worth two million dollars is an attempt by MWSC to decentralize the water system in Malé.
The water crisis that hit the greater Malé region following the 2014 fire incident at MWSC was the greatest crisis in the company's history. In the wake of this incident, MWSC has increased the number of fresh water production centers and launched three mega projects with the aim of regaining public faith in the company's services. Among these, the water plant established by Hitachi, is now ready for operation and undergoing trials. Water produced at this plant is to be stored in the water tanks near Kalaafaanu School in Malé. The plant has now been connected to the company's freshwater network. When in operation, this plant would act as additional guarantee.
The Managing Director of MWSC Ibrahim Fazul Rasheed said that an additional water plant, with the capacity of producing 2000 tonnes of water, is to be established on Haveeree Magu in Malé. He estimated the plant to be in operation this year.
The company assures that the establishment of MWSC's main water production center in Hulhumale' and the connection of the freshwater networks via China Maldives Friendship Bridge would ensure sustainable water security. MWSC estimates the company's projects to decentralize the water system in the greater Malé region to be completed by the end of 2018.
