Work begins in developing largest seaplane fleet terminal

Minister of Economic Development Mohamed Saeed has launched the land reclamation project, to develop the largest seaplane fleet terminal in the world.

Addressing the inaugural ceremony, the Economic Minister said that investor interest in Maldives has increased due to the optimistic visions from the country's economy. The terminal, being developed at Velaana International Airport would be constructed on 3.2 hectares of reclaimed land. 1.8 hectares is to be used for construction of the terminal building and the remaining 1.4 hectares would be used for seaplane parking. This is one of the largest segments in the development of the airport, targeting the world's largest seaplane fleet.

Speaking about the airport development project, the Managing Director of Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) Adhil Moosa said that this is one of the most important developmental projects undertaken by the government. He assured that the project is progressing at a swift pace.

The new terminal is being developed by Beijing Urban Construction Group (BUCG), the company that is also carrying out the runway development project.  On completion the terminal will have a 3400 metre long, 60 metre long runway.
