Economic Minister says the FTA with China is exemplary

Minister of Economic Development Mohamed Saeed has said that the Free Trade Agreement negotiated by Maldives and China is an example to other countries.

Speaking at the event held to commence the final phase of the negotiations on China Maldives Free Trade Agreement, Minister Saeed highlighted that the negotiations seeks to establish free trade between the largest and the smallest economies in the world. This shows the world that two countries with such huge economical differences can still work together, he added. The Minister said that the China Maldives Free Trade Agreement will be signed during the month of June this calendar year.

The final phase of the negotiations is scheduled to be concluded tomorrow with Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed heading the Maldivian delegation. During the negotiations, China agreed not to charge any tax for fish and seafood products being exported from Maldives, according to the Ministry of Economic Development.

The Government of Maldives is also seeking to establish Free Trade Agreements with some of the biggest economies around the globe including Great Britain, Japan and United States of America.
