Majority of pending cases concluded in 2016: DJA

The Department of Judicial Administration (DJA) said on Wednesday that a vast majority of pending cases were concluded last year.

The number of cases pending for more than one year stood at 27 percent of all submitted cases at the beginning of 2016 while that number was cut down to 12 percent by the end of the year, according to statistics released by DJA. The number of cases pending for more than one year fell from 1948 in 2015 to 798 by the end of 2016.

The case clearance rate for all 198 courts across the country stood at 103 percent.

The courts are putting in extra effort to conclude cases that have been pending for long periods of time, the department said, adding that the Supreme Court undertook major steps to expedite trials and strengthen the justice system during 2016.
