Clean water in majority of islands by mid next Year: President

President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has stated that his administration is set to provide clean water to 50% of the population by mid next year.

In his speech at the inauguration of clean water services in Dhiggaru Island, Meemu Atoll, the President highlighted various development projects being carried out in Dhiggaru and stated that a 250-kilowatt generator will be installed and become operational within the year.

The President touched on several ongoing development projects initiated by his administration which, with community support, will soon see completion. “The involvement and cooperation of communities is critical to continued development,” he said, pointing out that “political differences should not hinder progress or stand in the way of benefits to communities.”

The President also said that “in order to foster a disciplined citizenry it is key for our young people, the youth, to deploy their resourcefulness in service to the country.”

At the ceremony, Head of Dhiggaru Island Council, Imran Ismail presented the President with a plaque of appreciation recognising his contributions to the development of Dhiggaru.

The ceremony also saw the launching of Dhiggaru Sewerage System Project. The project was officially launched by Minister of Environment and Energy, Thoriq Ibrahim.
