Environment Minister Thoriq Ibrahim on Saturday called on everyone to do their part in properly managing and disposing of waste.
He made the appeal while inaugurating a clean-up campaign organised by Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA). The one-day campaign titled "Heyvahlaa Saafu" was conducted in Male' City.
Speaking at the event, Minister Thoriq noted that the Government accords high priority to establish proper waste management mechanisms across the country. He urged citizens and government authorities to support Waste Management Corporation’s (WAMCO) efforts to establish a sustainable and eco-friendly waste management mechanism.
Over 1200 people, including staff members from government offices and state-owned companies and students of schools and colleges, participated in the clean-up operation.
Many areas of Male' City were cleaned up during the campaign.
The campaign is aimed at instilling the habit of practicing environmentally friendly methods in disposing of waste as well as reminding citizens of their duty to keep roads and other public areas clean, MIRA said.
