Parliament to convene for opening session of 2017 on Feb. 6

The opening session of the People’s Majlis for 2017 will be held on February 6, the Parliament Secretariat has said.

The Secretariat has yet to announce a venue for the opening session. Last year’s opening session of the Parliament was held at Dharubaaruge Convention Centre.

As stipulated by Article 84 of the Constitution, President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom will deliver the annual Presidential Address to open the Parliament. The President's address will focus on the current status of the country, and proposed developmental plans for the year ahead.  

As per the parliamentary rules of procedure, the Majority Leader has to deliver a response to the Presidential Address within 14 days.
