Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Mohamed Asim has said that his recent visit to China has opened up new avenues for cooperation in higher education and economic development.
Speaking on PSM's Raajje Miadhu programme on Monday night, Dr. Asim said his meetings with the Chinese Vice-President Li Yuanchao, Foreign Minister Wang Yi and others were successful. “Discussions at the meetings were mainly focused on further enhancing ties between the two countries in a variety of fields,” he said. “I shared with Chinese officials information on the ongoing development projects in the Maldives, including those carried out with assistance from China. I also informed them of the investment opportunities in the Maldives for Chinese companies.”
The Minister concluded his first official visit to China on Sunday. During the visit, the Minister held meetings with the President of AIIB, Jin Liqun and the President of China EXIM Bank, Liu Lianke. The Minister also visited Dalian City of China and met with the Mayor of Dalian City, Xiao Shengfeng. The Maldives was awarded with two scholarships during Minister's meeting with the Vice Chancellor of Dalian Medical University, Zhao Jie. He also met Maldivian students at Dalian Medical University.
