Male’ region waste management system to be complete by 2017 end

Minister of Environment and Energy, Thoriq Ibrahim has revealed that the Government aims to establish a waste management system in Male’ region by the end of 2017.

He made the statement at a meeting held on Wednesday to discuss the establishment of an integrated solid waste management system in Kaafu, Alifu and Vaavu atolls.

The Ministry of Environment and Energy is now preparing to establish an integrated solid waste management system in Male’ region which would cover a huge percentage of the country’s population.

Speaking at the meeting held with partners of the project, Minister Thoriq emphasised the importance of establishing an integrated solid waste management system in Male’ area. He also highlighted the progress made by Waste Management Corporation in tackling the waste management issues faced by the capital city.

According to Minister of Finance, Mohamed Munnawar the MVR100 million project will be financed through the state budget and foreign loans.

Representatives of Asian Development Bank, Islamic Development bank, World Bank and Asian Infrastructure Development Bank also attended the meeting.
