EC files appeal against court order delaying council elections

Elections Commission has filed an appeal against the Civil Court’s order to delay the local council elections.

Speaking to PSM News, Ahmed Akram, a member of the Elections Commission, said their legal team filed an appeal at the High Court on Sunday, and despite the Civil Court’s order, the Commission is still going on with the preparations to hold the elections as scheduled.

The Civil Court on Thursday ordered the Elections Commission to push back the elections by 60 days.

The court ruling came following a petition filed by the ruling Maldives Progressive Party (PPM), citing that the party’s recent leadership dispute had hindered its efforts to prepare for the elections set for January 14.

Sitting councillors can remain in office beyond until the elections of new councillors, the ruling said.
