The Ministry of Housing and Infrastructure has said that work will soon begin to set up the first mechanical car parking system in Male’ City. The Ministry plans to install 20 parking systems across Male’ City to address the issues of traffic congestion and lack of adequate parking spaces.
The project, contracted to State Trading Organization (STO), will see the installation of 20 parking systems by March 2017. According to the Ministry, it has already acquired the first parking system and it will be set up near Velaanaage.
Speaking about the parking systems, Housing Minister, Dr Mohamed Muizzu said “the first mechanical parking system will be designed for cars, and will have the capacity to accommodate 10 cars.” Of the 20 systems, 10 systems will be specialized for motorcycles while the other 10 will be designated for cars, he added.
He also revealed plans to construct a parking building in Male’ Industrial Village area.
Mechanical parking systems do not occupy large areas of land and that the number of systems will be increased with the availability of land in Male’, according to the Housing Ministry.
