The Ministry of Environment and Energy on Sunday signed agreements to install weather information systems at 11 airports across the country.
The project, financed by the Japanese government, will bring the number of weather monitoring systems across the country to 24.
The airport weather information systems (AWIS) would help provide the necessary weather updates for the specific airport directly from that airport, which would also improve the services provided by Maldives Meteorological Service (MMS), the ministry said. img:http://s3.psmnews.mv/images/660x400/14802390637272.jpg|MoUs signed to install weather information systems at 11 airports - Photo: PSM
Speaking to the media after signing the agreements, Minister of Environment and Energy Thoriq Ibrahim highlighted the Government efforts to improve the services provided by Maldives Meteorological Service, adding that projects are underway to renovate weather centres in 8 islands.
These projects are expected to be completed within the next two months, he added.
Minister Thoriq also said they are currently in talks with the Italian government regarding the installation of 25 additional weather monitoring systems across the country.
The agreements on the installation of the Airport Weather Information Systems were signed with Island Aviation Service Limited, Regional Airports, Addu International Airport Private Limited, Pristine Islands Investment Private Limited, Villa Air Private Limited and Villa Shipping and Trading Company Private Limited.
The MVR3.57 million project will be completed by March next year, according to the Environment Ministry.
