Contractor assigned to Hulhumeedhoo coastal protection project

The Ministry of Environment and Energy has assigned a contractor to the coastal protection project in Hulhumeedhoo of Addu City.

Under the MVR22.6 million project aimed at protecting the vulnerable areas of the beach from erosion, rock boulders will be placed along a 1000-metre area of the shoreline.

As per the contract signed on Sunday, the contractor, RR Maldives Private Limited, is required to complete the project within 180 days.

Coastal erosion is a pressing concern for many islands across the country. The Government is currently undertaking numerous projects to tackle erosion, and according to the Environment Ministry, 70 inhabited islands are experiencing shoreline erosion.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Environment Minister Thoriq Ibrahim said “the government accords high priority to coastal protection projects, and noted that projects are currently underway in many inhabited islands.”

Speaking further, Thoriq noted that “the current government has undertaken more coastal protection projects than any other previous government.”

According to the Environment Ministry, the existing outer seawall of Hulhumeedhoo will also be renovated under the project.
