Minister of Gender and Family Zenysha Shaheed Zaki has expressed confidence that the Gender Equality Act will be implemented within the set timeframe.
In a special interview with Public Service Media (PSM) coinciding with the Government’s 3-year anniversary, she said the ministry is making final preparations to implement the law.
The Gender Equality Act seeks to ensure to eliminate discrimination between genders and establishes the role of government and other agencies in the implementation of the Act.
President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom ratified the Gender Equality Act in August this year, and is set to take effect six months after the date of ratification.
The legislation aims to mainstream and institutionalise equality for women, safeguard women’s rights from discrimination and eradicate the evil of gender-based violence.
