Gov’t. recognises importance of tapping into halal tourism: VP

Vice-President Abdulla Jihad has said that the Government recognises the importance of tapping into halal tourism in order to maintain the stronghold the Maldives has in the global tourism industry. He made the statement at the 3rd Islamic Banking and Finance Industry Conference which opened in Bandos Island Resort on Thursday.

He said the administration seeks to incorporate equity and inclusiveness in the course of development.

In his speech, the Vice President emphasised that President Abdullah Yameen Abdul Gayoom recognises the importance of Islamic economics for financing the development efforts of the nation. “The purpose of Maldives Centre for Islamic Finance Ltd is to achieve the important objective of developing Islamic finance and the halal industry in the country and to establish Maldives as a hub for Islamic finance in the South East,” He added.

The Vice President highlighted that halaal tourism is now an established concept in global tourism and that the administration recognises the importance of tapping into this lucrative market segment in order to maintain the stronghold Maldives has in the global tourism industry.

The Islamic Banking and Finance Industry Conference brings together the Islamic banking and finance fraternity to discuss a plethora of issues. This is the third edition of the conference.
