Government marks 3 years in office

The Government on Thursday marked three years in office with special activities across the country.

The administration plans to continue its 3-year anniversary celebrations for 10 days, with a special ceremony to be held on November 28. A sport festival for the youth is also planned as part of the activities to mark the anniversary.

As President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom enters the fourth year of his five-year term, his government says it has successfully delivered a number of key electoral pledges.

The President assumed office with the pledged of creating more opportunities for young people, improving the economy and making the country a safe place for everyone, the Government said, and he is undertaking an inclusive development policy that leaves no one behind regardless of their background or political belief.

Since the President took office in November 2013, the government has concentrated a lot of effort on developing the country’s capital Male’ City.

A redevelopment plan for Malé City was drawn up with the aim of easing congestion and creating spaces for parks and other public areas. A total of 8 parks have now been developed in the city while a snow park and a led park are nearing completion.

In October, the Government launched a special project redevelop the streets of Malé. Under the project, which is expected to be completed by September 2018, thirteen major streets of the capital including Majeedhee Magu will be resurfaced.

A new artificial beach was built on the western seaside of Malé, displaying the beauty, and culture and tradition of the Maldives.

Last year, the Republican Square and the surrounding areas were redeveloped with a musical fountain, a monument showing the unity of the Maldivians. The official presidential jetty of Malé was rebuilt and renamed to Izuddin Jetty under the project, which also saw the expansion of the Islamic Centre courtyard with marble tiles covering the entire area. The area is now being used for accommodating mass prayer congregations.

The Government is also developing an industrial village on the south-western side of Malé City with a waste management centre. The industrial village, being developed on 6.9 hectares of reclaimed land, is expected to change the landscape of the city. The Government plans to relocate garages, industrial workshops, dump yard, and chemical storage facilities in Malé to the industrial village, and it is expected to provide a huge gratification to the people living in Malé.

Over the past three years, major projects, including housing, transport and healthcare development, were undertaken in Addu City to improve services provided to residents of the city and the surrounding atolls.

The Government is also carrying out similar projects across the country with the aim of improving the living standards of the people.
