Parliament approves USD 8.7 million budget for Auditor General’s Office

The Parliament has approved a budget of USD 8.66 million for the Auditor General’s Office for 2027.

A total of 46 members voted in favour of the report on the office’s 2027 budget, following its review by the Parliament’s Finance Committee.

The committee made no changes to the budget proposal of USD 8.66 million submitted by the Auditor General’s Office.

The proposed budget includes USD 5.56 million in recurrent expenditure and USD 2.82 million for Public Sector Investment Programme (PSIP) projects.

The budget allocates approximately USD 63,619 for the Auditor General’s salary and allowances, while USD 690,408 has been set aside for staff training. A further USD 2.82 million has been allocated for the construction of the office’s new building in Hulhumalé, while administrative expenses account for approximately USD 1.29 million.

Of the USD 8.70 million allocated to the Auditor General’s Office for 2026, the office has spent USD 3.69 million so far. The office expects to incur an additional USD 2.92 million in expenditure this year.

The office told Parliament that approximately USD 2.01 million of the 2026 allocation is expected to remain unspent by the end of the year. It said its plans for next year’s budget had taken the anticipated underspending into account.

The Auditor General’s Office has also disclosed that it plans to conduct 394 audits next year.

The office’s budget is submitted to Parliament and approved separately from the state budget. However, the Auditor General’s Office budget must also be incorporated into the state budget approved by Parliament.
