Dental caries & obesity prevalent among 1st graders: report

Dental caries, eye conditions, and obesity are the most prevalent health problems among first-graders, a report released on Sunday showed.  

The report, compiled after a nationwide health screening programme, was released at a ceremony held at Hotel Jen Sunday morning.

2151 students from Male’ City and 4733 from the atolls were screened under the programme.

The health screening programme is conducted annually by the Education Ministry in collaboration with the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) medicals and healthcare facilities in the atolls.

Speaking at the event held to launch the report, Education Minister Dr Aishath Shiham highlighted the Government’s efforts to ensure the wellbeing of all students.  

Defence Minister Adam Shareef Umar assured MNDF’s continued support to such programmes.

The Education Ministry initiated the health screening programme for grade one students in 2014.
