CDE to conduct technical analysis to develop EESL programme

The Ministry of Environment and Energy has contracted CDE Private Limited to conduct a technical analysis of the market to develop a national energy efficiency standards and labelling (EESL) programme.

The project is carried out under the “Strengthening Low Carbon Energy Island Strategies” project, which is implemented by Ministry of Environment and Energy (MEE) assisted by United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) and financed by Government of Maldives and Global Environment Facility (GEF).

It aims to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions through increasing energy efficiency in the building sector by developing appropriate policies, guidelines and standards.

At a ceremony held today at the Environment Ministry on Thursday, the project agreement was signed by Minister of State for Environment and Energy, Abdul Matheen Mohamed and Sustainable Development Consultant of CDE Private Limited Mariyam Hana Saeed.

As per the agreement, the MVR254,000 project has to be completed by February 2017.

Speaking at the ceremony, State Minister Abdul Matheen said “the main objective of the technical analysis is to assess the characteristics of appliances imported to the Maldives and to capture baseline appliance market data in the Maldives.”

The results of the analysis will be used to inform and support government decision-making on the most suitable Energy Efficiency Labels and Standards in the future, the ministry said.

The analysis will focus on the following 9 appliances imported to the Maldives – air conditioners, washing machines, refrigerators, freezers, and combinations, electric fans, lights (indoor and outdoor), water pumps, electric ovens, televisions, and electric water heaters, it added.
