Addu International Airport Private Limited (AIA) has said preparations are underway to officially open the newly extended runway of Gan International Airport on Tuesday.
Under the airport development project, the existing 2200-metre runway has been extended by 960 metres.
The runway expansion will allow the airport to accommodate larger aircraft such as the Boeing 777, the airport operator said.
Speaking about the airport development project, General Manager of AIA, Ibthishama Ahmed Saeed said that runway extension work and necessary surveys had now been completed.
In June, the company said it had been holding discussions with more than 20 international airlines to bring more direct flights into Gan.
