Parliament Majority Leader and Villi-Maafannu MP Ahmed Nihan Hussein Manik was appointed chair of the Parliament Budget Committee on Wednesday.
Kudahuvadhoo MP Ahmed Amir was appointed co-chair of the Budget Committee, which is composed of members of the Public Finance Committee and the Economic Committee.
Both MPs were elected at a joint meeting of the Public Finance Committee and the Economic Committee.
MP Nihan also chaired the committee that reviewed the state budget for 2016.
The Finance Minister Ahmed Munawar presented a budget of MVR26.7 billion for 2017 at Tuesday’s Parliament sitting.
The projected annual State Budget was submitted pursuant to Article 96 (a) of the Constitution and under Article 179 of the Regulation Governing the Proceedings of Parliament, which stipulates prior to the commencement of each financial year the Minister of Finance shall submit for approval to Parliament a budget containing the projected revenue and expenditures for the year, and a statement of actual revenue and expenditures for the preceding year.
