President Yameen urges President Gayoom to return to PPM

President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, the Advisor of ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), called on the leader of PPM – former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom to reverse his decision to withdraw support for the Government.

President Yameen made the call, speaking at the rally held by PPM at the Alimas Carnival Friday night.

It was the first time President Yameen commented on the issue, after President Gayoom announced his withdrawal of support to the Government, following an internal leadership dispute within the party.

Describing President Gayoom’s absence in the rally as a “loss”, President Yameen spoke against the formation of two factions of the ruling party, and said it was not the time for divisions, but time to work together.

Describing attempts by President Gayoom to control majority in Parliament, President Yameen called on the former President to abandon such attempts and return to serving PPM.

He also defended the decision to seek court intervention to the leadership dispute within the party.

After withdrawing support for the Yameen administration, President Gayoom openly criticised President Yameen and his Government.
