President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom said on Friday night that his was the only government which had been sincere about development.
He made the remarks speaking at a rally held by the ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM).
President Yameen said his government had set aside political rhetoric and put the country on a path of much-needed development.
Citing that he took office when the country was in the midst of social and economic uncertainty, President Yameen said his Government had addressed these issues and “put back smiles on the people’s faces.”
He said that his government had challenged its political opponents and put forward a development agenda focused on youth empowerment.
He said his socio-economic development agenda was bearing fruit, and that his opponents are critical of the government’s developmental achievements to forward their political agenda.
He further said the opposition was critical of the government’s decision to leave the Commonwealth for political reasons, and reiterated that his government would not allow foreign intervention in the country's domestic affairs.
Urging the public to support the government’s developmental work, President Yameen said a second term in office was needed to deliver the government pledges.
