President Yameen triumphant in protecting sovereignty: Azleen

Home Minister Azleen Ahmed has said President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, despite taking office at a time of instability and challenge, triumphed in protecting and upholding the nation’s sovereignty.

He made the statement addressing a special function held in Fulidhoo Island of Vaavu Atoll on Thursday to mark Victory Day.

Official celebrations to mark Victory Day are being held in Fulidhoo.

The Home Minister said President Yameen took office at a time Abdulla Luthufee, one of the masterminds of the 1988 coup attempt, had fled the country, and since then his passport had been revoked and an Interpol red notice had been issued for his arrest.

“Attempts to bring Luthfy back to face justice show the Government’s commitment to protect the country’s independence and sovereignty,” he added.

Noting that every attempt that had threatened the country’s sovereignty were orchestrated by a few local conspirators, the minister assured that the Government would take every action necessary to uphold and protect the country’s sovereignty and independence.

Speaking at the function, Keyodhoo MP Moosa Nizar attributed the people’s Islamic faith and religious unity as the main reason behind the success in thwarting the attempts to oppress the country.

A photo exhibition, showcasing pictures of the day was also opened in Fulidhoo on Thursday.
