The Ministry of Defence and National Security has launched a software in a bid to strengthen monitoring and surveillance of imported chemicals.
The software titled “Makudi” was launched by Defence Minister Adam Shareef Umar at a ceremony held at the Coast Guard building.
The software will enable the establishment of a chemical database in the country, the ministry said.
A special permit has to be obtained from the Defence Ministry and other authorities to import chemicals into the country.
Under the efforts to further strengthen permit procedures and data collection related to chemical imports, the ministry has now launched software with the assistance of National Centre for Information Technology (NCIT).
Speaking at the event held to launch the software, the Defence Minister announced plans to strengthen safety and security measures at chemical storage facilities.
The Environment Ministry regulates the environmental impact of chemicals imported into the country.
Environment Minister Thoriq Ibrahim said “they are now working with the Defence Ministry to draw up guidelines on disposal methods for expired chemicals.”
Since 2014, the Defence Ministry has issued over 4000 permits to import chemicals into the country.
