First Maldives Marine Symposium held in Male’

The first Maldives Marine Science Symposium has been held at Maldives National University in Male’.

The symposium was organised by Marine Research Centre (MRC) in collaboration with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), Maldives National University (MNU), United States Agency for International Development (USAID), and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

It was officially inaugurated by Fisheries Minister Dr. Mohamed Shainee.

MRC said the one-day symposium sought to share knowledge and experiences which would contribute towards the conservation and sustainable utilisation of the country’s valuable marine environment and resources.

It brought together scientists from different areas of the field to share their knowledge and experiences from the various research projects that are being carried out in the Maldives, it added, and served as an excellent opportunity to share and discuss your work with your peers, and to forge new research partnerships.

Speaking after inaugurating the symposium, Dr. Shainee highlighted the efforts undertaken by the government over the past years in the area of marine science.

The Maldives is one of the most ideal places to conduct marine and climate research, he said, and such research projects are vital for conservation efforts in the country.

Speaking at the function, Director of MRC – Dr. Mohamed Shiham Adam noted the contributions of the symposium to the tourism and education sector.

MRC said the symposium saw the presentation of research papers and presentations on a wide array of topics related to marine science.
