EC decides not to use e-voting in local council elections

The Elections Commission (EC) has decided not to use e-voting system in the upcoming local council elections.

The commission earlier said e-voting would be conducted along with manual voting in three islands in the January election.

EC said it decided not to use e-voting following requests from many political parties.

The main opposition Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) earlier raised concerns over the introduction of e-voting in the country, saying it would open the door for election fraud.

The commission first initiated work to introduce e-voting in the country in 2008, followed by a decision to adopt e-voting in 2011.

The vote, slated for January 14, would see the election of 651 council members to island, atoll and city councils.

The commission earlier said that nominations for the election would be opened on October 26, and the exact number of ballot boxes to be placed in the election would be decided with the finalisation of the voter registry.
