PPM urges members not to run for councils as independents

Deputy Leader of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) – Fonadhoo MP Abdul Raheem Abdulla said on Sunday that party members independently contesting the Local Council Elections could hinder development of respective constituencies.

He was speaking on PSM’s Raajje Miadhu programme, after some PPM members revealed their intention to contest the upcoming elections as independent candidates.

Speaking about PPM’s leadership dispute, Abdul Raheem said the party advisor – President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom remains its leader as per the Civil Court order.

He said it was most advisable for PPM members to contest the elections on party tickets, as the support and cooperation of local councils was important for the Government to conduct developmental projects.

All challenges faced by the party due to the leadership dispute have now been resolved with the High Court ruling, he added.
