Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) has completed preparations to begin work on developing waste management centres on most of the 34 islands assigned to the company.
The development of waste management centres on islands without such facilities is part of ongoing efforts under a nationwide system to address the Maldives’ waste management challenges. As part of this initiative, different companies have been tasked with developing waste management centres on various islands.
Speaking to PSM News, WAMCO General Manager Ismail Ubaid said the company has been assigned to develop waste management centres on 34 islands. He said resources have already been mobilised on 90 per cent of those islands, with preparations completed to commence work.
He explained that work has not yet started on the remaining islands because locations for the waste management centres have not been designated in their land use plans.
“At present, mobilisation has been completed on 90 per cent of the islands, and the projects are at the stage of commencing work. The remaining islands have not started because specific sites for the waste management centres have not yet been allocated in the land use plans. Work is progressing on all the other islands,” Ismail Ubaid said.
The Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy has previously stated that work is underway to establish waste management centres on 129 islands by the end of July next year. Of these, 110 islands have been assigned to MTCC, Fenaka, RDC and WAMCO, while the remaining 19 islands have been assigned to private companies.
