Foreign minister says women's equal participation in global decision-making is essential

The full, equal and meaningful participation of women in global decision-making is essential, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Iruthisham Adam said on Thursday as the Maldives marked the International Day of Women in Diplomacy.

Speaking at a panel discussion titled "Women in Action: Diplomacy across Sectors", organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the minister highlighted the contributions of women to diplomacy across all sectors and stressed the importance of empowering future generations of women leaders. She also underscored the need to address barriers that limit women's full participation.

The event featured a panel discussion involving officials from various sectors, focusing on the role of women in negotiations and international engagement. Participants discussed how women contribute to shaping international outcomes and advancing national interests, while examining challenges and opportunities for strengthening women's role in diplomacy and international decision-making in the years ahead.

The panel included Deputy Director General at the Ministry of Health, Family and Welfare Aminath Shaina Abdullah, Director at the Ministry of Fisheries, Agriculture and Ocean Resources Munshida Ibrahim, Assistant Chief Counsel at the Attorney General’s Office Faena Fayyaz, and Principal International Relations Officer at the Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy Fathimath Usra. The discussion was moderated by Assistant Director at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Mariyam Fathika Fayaz.

The event opened with remarks from Joint Secretary Mariyam Midhfa Naeem and concluded with remarks from Deputy Desk Officer Aminath Isfa Ibrahim.

Members of the diplomatic community, representatives of various ministries and students from Ahmadhiyya International School, Centre for Higher Secondary Education, Villa High School, Maldives National University and Villa College attended the event.

The Maldives led United Nations General Assembly Resolution A/RES/76/269, which proclaimed the International Day of Women in Diplomacy. The resolution was adopted with the support of 191 member states.
