The Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) has commenced an operation following reports of foreign fishing vessels operating between Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll and Fuvahmulah City.
While the MNDF has not yet disclosed detailed information regarding the ongoing operation, the authority stated that the fishing boats are currently operating approximately 9 nautical miles west of Fiyoari, Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll.
According to the MNDF, reports indicate that two foreign fishing vessels are traveling from east to west through the Equatorial Channel between Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll and Fuvahmulah, roughly 9 nautical miles off the west coast of Fiyoari.
Upon receiving the report, the MNDF Southern Area Command immediately mobilised and began operations in the area.
The MNDF routinely intercepts unauthorised fishing vessels entering Maldivian territorial waters and hands them over to the Maldives Police Service for further investigation.
